What is an AmTryke?
The AmTryke is a therapeutic tricycle for children with disabilities. It was the concept of a physical therapist in 1990 who asked an AMBUCS chapter if they could provide a tricycle for the children with disabilities. She felt such a tricycle would help to build self-esteem, assist with muscle development and allow the child to experience the fun of riding. The Longview, TX chapter of AMBUCS took over the responsibility and established AmTryke Inc. in 1994. A bicycle company now manufactures them and, to date, more than 1,500 AmTrykes have been distributed. AmTrykes are provided free of charge to individuals, schools and clinics.
Is there just one size of AmTryke?
AmTrykes are available in three sizes, the 12” regular size which fits children up to 41 inches tall, about ages 3 and older and a leg length of 17 to 20 inches; the 16” large size for children 41 inches and taller with a leg length of 20.5 to 30.5 inches, and the All Terrain AmTryke for children with leg lengths of 19 to 24 inches. The Toddler AmTryke, a smaller version, is in process and should be available in early 2003.
